Building together

Working together to improve the quality of life of both the child and their carer.

Therapy

Timion has two full-time occupational therapists and two voluntary physiotherapists dedicated to working with the families. Our aim is to equip and empower the caregivers to be the daily therapy providers.  This requires a change from thinking that therapy only happens at a clinic, but rather that the carers receive further input at the clinic to build on what they have already learnt and practice.

Equipment Provision

Therapists working in government settings can apply to Timion for Timion equipment to be donated to their clients, thus ensuring that all children irrespective of financial background have access to the therapeutic equipment they require.

Any application for equipment is screened by a Timion therapist to ensure that appropriate goals have been set with the caregiver for what they hope the child will achieve by receiving the equipment. Equipment must be collected from Jeffreys Bay and issued by the referred therapist.

Home Visits

For children living in the Kouga and Nelson Mandela Bay areas, the Timion therapists have the privilege of issuing the equipment on behalf of the therapists from local government direct to the children’s home.

This provides us with a bigger picture of the child’s living environment and family and enables the Timion team to build relationships with those families. We provide equipment, education on CP and handling skills for the caregivers to empower them to understand the nature of their child’s disability and how they can support them to reach their full potential.

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational and speech therapy treatment strategy that utilises equine movement. The therapist uses the characteristic movements of the horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input whilst the client is sitting on the horse.

Since 2016 we have held individual Hippotherapy sessions for groups of 4 to 6 children once a week for a period of 8-10 weeks.

The therapists and volunteers work with child-specific goals ranging from improved balance to enhanced vision and hand function.

During the Hippotherapy sessions we see progress and improvements within the therapeutic goals.  However, even more encouraging is the feedback from the caregivers who have observed improvements in their child’s daily activities at home.
